Coming into the month of December found the Lady Huskies ready for action. It started on Monday, November 26th when senior captain, Nikki Petrich (right) was named the Hockey East Player of the Week following the previous weeks 2-1 victory over Quinnipiac.
On Saturday, December 1, Northeastern was back in action at Matthews Arena to take on fellow Hockey East opponent, Vermont. The Lady Huskies were able to continue on their winning ways as they held off the Catamounts 2-1. After a scoreless first period Husky junior Ali Bielawski (below left) redirected a pass from Katy Applin to beat Vermont goalie Kristen Olychuck to take a 1-0 lead with under five minutes remaining in the period. The Catamounts were able to tie the game with under a minute left in the second period thanks to a goal by Brittany Nelson.
With the third period under way Vermont was called for a penalty which the Lady Huskies were able to capitalize on scoring on the power play. On a pass from Lindsay Berman, Hockey East Player of the Week, Nikki Petrich was able to wrap the puck past the post and Olychuck to give the Lady Huskies the 2-1 advantage. The Huskies would have to their work cut out for them as they would have to hold off Vermont on a 2-player advantage. They would be successful on the penalty kill and go on to win their second straight game. This win would also give Coach Laura Schuler her first back-to-back victories in her four year coaching career at Northeastern.
Sunday, December 2nd did not prove to be so memorable for the Lady Huskies as they took on top Hockey East team, New Hampshire. Freshman goalie, Leah Sulyma did all she could to hold off the Wildcats as she stopped a career-high 43 of 47 shots on goal. Unfortunately the Huskies were not able to get any offense working as they fell to UNH 4-0. The Lady Huskies will wrap up their December play next Saturday as they take on cross-town rival Boston College at 2pm at Matthews Arena.
